Urmia is one of the oldest cities in Iran, and many consider that the city has emerged two thousand years before the Holy Messiah.

One of the factors that has been effective on the importance of Urmia is that this city has been on the way of the turnpike such as Asia Minor, Caucasus and Mesopotamia, and so many traders and they pass through it and have made the importance of this region.
Before the religion of Islam enters the land of Iran, Urmia is one of the areas which is among the most important areas in the ancientrecords that civilization in the Iron Age. About the Okartis we have to say that they have common ancestors between Armenians and the Georgian, and for approximately 2100 years, from 1500 BC and 600 years after Christ had been governing these regions. Of course, this is about the people of Urmia, which they are considered as the same, but ultimately, as the Assyrian name of them, is very impressed by the Assyrians.
ارومیه یکی از قدیمی‌ترین شهرهای ایران است و بسیاری بر این نظر هستند که این شهر، ۲ هزار سال قبل از میلاد حضرت مسیح (ع) به وجود آمده است.
ارومیه از آن دسته از شهرهایی در ایران است که بسیاری از اتفاقات تاریخی مهم و تاثیر گذاری را در گذر ایام به خود دیده است. این شهر حتی در دوره‌هایی از تاریخ به دست نیروهای مهاجم روس و عثمانی تصرف هم شده است. یکی از عواملی که بر روی اهمیت ارومیه بسیار تاثیرگذار بوده این است که این شهر بر سر راه شاهراه‌هایی همچون آسیای صغیر، قفقاز و میان رودان بوده است و به همین خاطر تجار و یازرگانان زیادی از آن گذر می‌کرده اند و باعث اقبال و اهمیت این منطقه شده بوده اند.
قبل از این که دین اسلام وارد سرزمین ایران شود، ارومیه از جمله مناطقی بوده است که در زمره‌ی نواحی تحت امر
اورارتویدر دروه‌ی باستان که تمدنی در عصر آهن بوده است. درباره‌ی اورارتویی‌ها باید این نکته را بگوییم که آن‌ها دارای اجداد مشترکی بین ارمنی‌ها و گرجی‌ها بوده اند و تا حدودا ۲۱۰۰ سال یعنی از ۱۵۰۰ سال قبل از میلاد و ۶۰۰ سال پس از میلاد مسیح بر این مناطق حکمرانی می‌کرده اند. البته این نکته را درباره‌ی مردم ارومیه بگوییم که آن‌ها با این که اورارتویی محسوب می‌شده اند اما در نهایت همانطور که از اسم آشوری آن‌ها بر می‌آید، بسیار تحت تاثیر آشوری‌ها بوده اند.
